As a golden sun began to dip low on a picture-perfect spring evening, guests on the sun deck of the “New Spirit” enjoyed cocktails and conversation as the boat left the dock near Norfolk’s Town Point Park and set out on a relaxing cruise down the Elizabeth River. This special event in March was designed to reintroduce locals and visitors to the Spirit of Norfolk, a fixture on the city’s waterfront for the last 45 years.
A fire rendered the old Spirit of Norfolk boat unsalvageable in June of 2022. The “New Spirit” is technically the Spirit of Mount Vernon, which sailed from Washington, D.C., and is now moored at the previous Spirit of Norfolk’s well-known spot adjacent to Waterside. It will be here for the season with 90,000 visitors expected during that time.
The New Spirit will look very familiar to past guests who have enjoyed dining and special events aboard the previous vessel. Similar to its predecessor, this Spirit has three levels including two interior decks and three exterior observation decks with a capacity of 400 guests. New menus, craft cocktails and specialty cruises have also been planned to give guests an enhanced and memorable experience during the 2.5-hour cruise.
