CoVa Battle of the Burgers—the meatiest, cheesiest food event in Coastal Virginia—is coming in hot and juicy to Chesapeake City Park on June 8, 2024

With a brand-new location, Coastal Virginia Magazine’s CoVa Battle of the Burgers is back and better than ever. Bring your burger-loving, beer-drinking friends and join us at Chesapeake City Park on Saturday, June 8 from 1-5 p.m. (Noon-5 p.m. for VIP ticket holders). Some of the region’s best restaurants will be serving up their most crave-able burger creations. Participating restaurants compete for top prizes and the ultimate burger lover’s bragging rights. Learn more at covaburgerbattle.com.

Burgers & Beer: Along with the burgers, there will be a variety of local and Virginia craft beers and seltzers for pairing and sharing.

CoVa Battle of the Burgers Participating Restaurants*

185 Restaurant
This humble little Poquoson spot has earned a big reputation for bold flavors and comfort food classics with flair. Breakfast is big. But so are burgers, with several varieties on the menu including the Smokehouse, the Mushroom Swiss, the Black’n Bleu, and the 185 Cheeseburger, a 6-ouncer with lettuce, tomato, cheddar, pickles and smokehouse mayo on brioche. Yes, please. 185restaurant.com

The newest addition to the Oceanfront Cavalier Resort, inside the Embassy Suites, this cool yet casual restaurant named after silent film star Fatty Arbuckle has an old Hollywood vibe. Craft burgers like the “Mobley Burger” (a nod to Conrad Hilton’s first hotel), figure prominently on a menu with comfort-food shareables, pasta, crabcakes and more. Will their burger be a blockbuster? arbucklesvb.com

The Bee and the Biscuit
This beloved Pungo brunch and lunch spot specializes in fresh-off-the-farm local ingredients served in its “Big Farm Truck” breakfasts, benedicts, omelets, biscuits, sweets, sandwiches, salads, seasonal specials, mimosa flights and more. Could we see a breakfast smash burger at this year’s Burger Battle? An eggs benny burger on a biscuit? Some sort of donut-for-a-bun decadence? We can’t wait. beebiscuit.com

Burger Theory
Is it the special blend of Certified Angus Beef chuck, brisket and short rib that draws fans to Burger Theory in Newport News? Or perhaps the uber-customizable patties for more than 4,000 possible combos? Some house burgers include the BT Boss, Lone Star, Farm Fresh, BBQ Burger, The Philly and Breakfast Burger. Just a theory, but we think they’ll be ready to rumble. burgertheorynewportnews.com
The Butcher’s Son
With locations in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, The Butcher’s Son pays sophisticated homage to the classic American steakhouse with an elevated, modern vibe to impress any dinner date. Alongside premium ribeyes and prime rib on their menu, you’ll find The Butcher’s Burger with pork belly, fried egg, cabbage slaw and soy glaze. What magnificent meaty creation will they cook up? butcherson.com

Coastal Kitchen Restaurant
One Yelp reviewer gave this homestyle cooking hotspot in a Gloucester shopping center, “five yummies on a five-yummy scale.” This is stick-to-your-ribs goodness with breakfast, lunch and dinner all day. Think biscuits and gravy, mac and cheese, fried flounder sandwiches, house-made crabcakes and unpretentious, just delicious burgers. FIREBREW Bar & Grill
Their Bourbon, Bacon & Mushroom Burger was a banger (and a People’s Choice winner) at last year’s Burger Battle, so we’re fired up to see what they do this time. Located in the VB Red Mill area, FIREBREW is known for flavorful, fresh-cooked fare using their 600+ degree open flame oven and grill. Maybe this year it’ll be their BBQ Bacon Ranch Burger. We can dream. fire-brew.com

Fishers Neighborhood Kitchen
Never underestimate the joy of a great neighborhood bar and grill. Fishers fills that “everybody knows your name” niche in style on Great Neck Road, offering tasty appetizers, entrees, nightly specials, brunch, live music and happy hour all day. And you can bet on their burgers, too, from sliders with pickles and house sauce to the Bacon Cheeseburger. Grab a neighbor and come check them out. fishersvb.com

Fuller’s Raw Bar
From the best local oysters (including buck-a-shuck Tuesdays) and steamer baskets to Shrimp Tacos, Jambalaya, and Catfish and Grits, Fuller’s Raw Bar in Phoebus is a go-to for a good time and great local seafood. They also make a mean burger, a ground brisket smash patty with cheese, LTO, dijonaise and a pickle. We are excited to welcome them to CoVa Burger Battle. facebook.com/fullersrawbar

The General Public
The General Public’s long-awaited expansion from Suffolk to a second home in Downtown Norfolk means more people to love their brined and smoked wings, fried chicken sandwiches, loaded waffle fries, salads and internationally inspired bowls (Caribbean, Thai, Coconut Curry). The burger menu is a thing of beauty on its own, from the Plain Jane to the Surf and Turf. generalpublic208.com

The Ghent
With its trendy rooftop bar and self-pour draft system serving beer, wine and seltzer, this new spot named for its Norfolk neighborhood is the place to chill this summer. A bevy of creative burgers grace their menu including the BYOB (two smash patties, cheddar and your choice of toppings), the Smokehouse, Southwest, Pimiento Cheese & Fried Pickle, and Blueberry & Goat Cheese. theghent.com

Lager Heads
Alongside classic shareables and crowd-pleasing entrees at this lively spot in the Hilton Garden Inn at the Oceanfront is a chef-crafted, gourmet burger selection too big to fit between two buns. There’s the Classic Burger, the Southerner, the Knockout Burger, the Fire Burger, the Mushroom Swiss Burger, the Cowboy, the Big Bacon Burger, the Black & Bleu Burger, and the Beyond Burger. Better come hungry! lagerheads.com

J&K Style Grill
“Home of the Original Waffle Burger,” J&K Style Grill has been a frequent guest at CoVa Battle of the Burgers, and we’re pumped to welcome back this flavorful family affair with two VB locations and a food truck. Besides burgers, J&K is known for its stuffed wings, gourmet eggrolls, loaded fries and house sauces, all served with a heaping helping of friendly hospitality. jandkstylegrill.com

Pour Girls
The menu at this proudly woman-owned bar and grill on Queens Way in Hampton is loaded with local seafood, comfort foods, seasonal fare, fresh cocktails, craft beer and wine. But don’t be surprised when your PG Blackened Burger comes with a side of “Chick Sticks” (fries). Their brunch game is strong and so is their live music lineup. Can’t wait to see what they have on tap for Burger Battle. pourgirlsbar.com

Red Point Taphouse
Craft brewery and kitchen Red Point Taphouse represented Smithfield in juicy style at last year’s Burger Battle with their “Hamtown Deluxe” featuring a 50/50 bacon and beef patty. With an eclectic menu showcasing locally sourced ingredients, house brews, craft cocktails, and wines in a casual, vintage industrial atmosphere, no doubt Red Point will ham things up in a good way. redpointtaphouse.com
SATE: A New American Experience
Take notice, Burger Battle competitors and guests: Chef Kyle Fowlkes and his crew come to win. They took second place in the People’s Choice competition for their “Tina Had a Little Lamb” burger in 2023, and with their popular food truck and newly opened restaurant at City Center at Oyster Point, their creative fire is burning hot. Expect some sublime comfort fusion goodness. sateexperience.com

The Vanguard Brewpub & Distillery
One of the coolest spots in CoVa to see local and touring bands, The Vanguard in the historic Hampton armory, also happens to be a full-service restaurant with a seasonal menu of creatively crafted starters, soups, salads, flatbreads, sandwiches, tacos and plenty of burgers. Will it be the Vanguard burger with white cheddar, bacon and red ale aioli? We like the sound of that. thevanguard757.com

*The Burger Lineup: This list includes participating restaurants as of press time for Coastal Virginia Magazine. New restaurants added since publication include Kitchenfinity, Unity Kitchen and Water Street Grille. The restaurant lineup is subject to change. Check covaburgerbattle.com for the current list.

Hey Coastal Virginia!
Just a heads up: we’re giving our servers a little TLC this Thursday, May 2, starting at 4:00 PM. While you’re avoiding the 44% chance of rain out there, our website might take a quick siesta. We’ll make sure it’s awake as soon as possible!
