If you want to know the best time to plant peas and spinach in Coastal Virginia, how to cultivate great soil locally or the finer points of chicken ownership, “Farmer John” is your guy. A longtime Virginia Beach farmer formerly with Pungo’s New Earth Farm and Farmer John’s Market at Farmhouse Brewery in Kempsville, John D. Wilson, aka “Farmer John,” is the author of a new book called From the Ground Up.

The book is a collection of original columns from Princess Anne Independent News community newspaper as is published its parent company, Pungo Publishing Co. The book “takes readers on a humorous, passionate journey through topics related to healthy eating and sustainable practices,” noted a press release. Copies are available through Kate’s Next Door Market in Virginia Beach (KatesNextDoorMarket.com). A portion of the proceeds support local journalism.
