Edge District Welcomes the New Rochambeau Roadside Inn

By Chelsea Sherman

On the edge of York County, Williamsburg and James County is a bustling center of culinary creativity, craft beverages and family-friendly entertainment. The Edge District, formally curated in 2019, is a must-visit spot on your adventure in the Historic Triangle. And this summer, it became home to Williamsburg’s first renovated modern motor lodge, the Rochambeau Roadside Inn.

Rochambeau Motel was built in 1954 on Capitol Landing Road, and it was a family-run establishment for nearly 70 years. Three years ago, real estate developer Lyle Schiavone began the process of purchasing the property. Schiavone was born and raised in Williamsburg and has long wanted to work on a project in the area. He closed on the motel last fall and renovations have been underway since then. Schiavone’s sister Anna Covington also came on board as the brand manager, so the inn will continue the tradition of being a family endeavor.

The Rochambeau Roadside Inn is a 22-room motor lodge, designed as a present-day take on the mid century motel concept. The majority of the rooms are king rooms and classic double rooms with standard occupancy, along with one large suite that accommodates five guests. There are also three family suites, which comprise a king bedroom and adjoining “bunk room”—a queen-size bottom bunk with a twin-sized top bunk.

“The original motor lodges differentiated from hotels because you were parking your motor vehicle in front of the room, and the rooms weren’t attached to the common areas. That’s what makes this a ‘roadside inn,’” Schiavone says.

Rochambeau Roadside Inn offers guests a lodging option that differs greatly from the traditional Triangle-area hotels and bed and breakfasts.

“We’re going for vintage charm with modern amenities. We’re not trying to be traditional or old-timey. There are plenty of great bed and breakfast options in this area if you’re looking for that,” Schiavone says. “This is your modern day basecamp, and from here you can go and explore the area. We have grab-and-go items available that you can take with you when you head out for the day.”

The Rochambeau Roadside Inn operates as a limited-service hotel. Guests get the nostalgic charm of an old-school motor lodge, with all the conveniences of a professionally managed property. There is contactless check-in available so you can arrive at any time, but is available during business hours to tend to any needs.

“What really drew us to this project is that it’s unique for this area,” Schiavone says. “It’s a great option for everyone from parents visiting their kids at William and Mary, to young families taking a weekend trip to Williamsburg.”
