Nestled on a scenic bank along the Rappahannock River on Virginia’s Middle Peninsula, Tappahannock is a quaint yet vibrant coastal community just 45 miles northeast of Richmond. Established in 1682, Tappahannock is the oldest town in Essex County and today is best known for its incredible outdoor recreation.
Tappahannock offers public access to the Rappahannock River at two public beaches, including the scenic Duke Street Beach, perfect for launching a kayak or relaxing on the sandy shore. The town’s new state-of-the-art park, Tappahannock Central Park, featuring a splash pad, pickleball courts, and more, is a must-do for families. “With the addition of Tappahannock Central Park, our development along Hoskins Creek, and new kayak rentals on the river, we’re investing in a future where Tappahannock is both a premier destination and a thriving home for our residents,” says Town Manager Eric Pollitt. “This growth brings together recreation, nature, and community—key elements that make Tappahannock truly special.”
Golf enthusiasts will enjoy teeing off at Hobbs Hole Golf Course, a 18-hole course covering 6,700 yards of play to both members and the public. Shopping lovers will discover unique finds in Tappahannock’s specialty, boutique, and antique shops, as well as at its farmers market, held on the third Saturday of the month from April through October.
Tappahannock’s casual, diverse dining scene offers a little something for every palate, from fresh seafood to global tastes to American fare. Award-winning NN Burger is a town staple, serving up fresh foods made from scratch, plus live entertainment. In a historic building dating back to the town’s early days, 1710 Tavern prepares locally sourced dishes in an atmosphere with both fine dining and patio seating. Maltese Brewing Company and 528 Italian American are both excellent spots to taste local libations. The 1950s-style ACME Ice Cream Parlor is a fun, eclectic shop in which to enjoy delicious ice cream.
