A History of Tradition
After working for years in the restaurant business, Robert Steinhilber decided to get away from Norfolk’s “city life” and moved to the country. It was 1935 when he purchased the site of the Lynnhaven Golf and Country Club on the Lynnhaven River in Virginia Beach.
Thalia Acres, as it became known, emerged as a weekend retreat offering horseback riding, canoeing, and hiking. “Steiny” was clearly missed in the restaurant world and friends soon convinced him to return to the business. In 1937, building on the original foundation of the clubhouse he personally began construction of the present main dining room. In 1939, after marrying Marion Eley, he opened the doors to what has become one of the oldest family owned and operated restaurants in Virginia, Steinhilber’s Thalia Acres Inn.
Continuing his commitment to service, quality and tradition is his daughter Jeanne and grandson, Brady. Jeanne and Brady are proud to continue into the future with respect and admiration for the tradition of the past.
