Changing Lives One Ride at a Time

Virginia Beach-based EQUI-KIDS is celebrating 35 years of life-changing equine-assisted services for children, military veterans and more

For 35 years, EQUI-KIDS has been a beacon of hope in Virginia Beach, providing life-changing equine-assisted services to individuals with special needs, military personnel and first responders. Nestled on a 92-acre farm, this nonprofit organization harnesses the power of horses to foster healing, strength and confidence. Here’s a closer look at what makes EQUI-KIDS a transformative force in the community.

About EQUI-KIDS
EQUI-KIDS is a Premier-Accredited therapeutic riding program through PATH International, offering equine-assisted activities and therapies. The organization serves individuals with a wide range of challenges—physical, cognitive, behavioral, and mental health-related—through tailored riding experiences. Their facility is currently home to approximately 20 specially trained therapy horses, from miniature horses to majestic Clydesdales, ensuring that riders of all needs can participate safely and effectively.

Who They Serve
EQUI-KIDS welcomes participants from diverse backgrounds, ensuring accessibility for children and adults with disabilities, as well as military service members and first responders. Examples of their specialized programs include: Therapeutic Riding for individuals aged five and older with various diagnoses, promoting physical and emotional well-being; EQUI-VETS, a program for active-duty service members and veterans, including partnerships with the Naval and VA hospitals;  EQUI-HEROES, designed for first responders, this initiative provides stress relief and therapeutic benefits through equine interactions; Equine-Assisted Therapy, occupational, physical, and speech therapy sessions using horses as part of the healing process; and Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy, mental health programs that incorporate horses to aid in treating anxiety, depression and PTSD.

How They Help
The therapeutic benefits of horseback riding extend far beyond the saddle. EQUI-KIDS has witnessed remarkable transformations in its participants, including: Physical Growth, improved core strength, balance and coordination; Emotional and Mental Health, reduction in anxiety and depression, along with increased confidence and self-esteem; Behavioral Improvements, many parents and teachers report enhanced focus and behavior in children who participate in the programs; and Lifelong Connections through which riders often form deep bonds with their horses, creating an enriching and healing experience.

How You Can Get Involved
EQUI-KIDS thrives on community support, and there are many ways to contribute: Volunteer, whether you prefer hands-on work as a sidewalker or horse leader, barn maintenance, event assistance, or administrative support, there’s a role for everyone; Donate via contributions that help cover program costs, horse care, and scholarships for riders in need; Sponsor a Horse or Rider with financial support that helps ensure that both horses and participants receive the care and opportunities they deserve; or Attend Events such fundraisers like their annual Stall Ball, Warrior Cup or other community gatherings that provide crucial support for the organization.

A Legacy of Impact
Since its founding in 1989, EQUI-KIDS has helped thousands of individuals find healing and empowerment through horses. Many former riders now give back by volunteering, ensuring that future generations can benefit from the same life-changing experiences. As EQUI-KIDS celebrates 35 years of service, its mission remains clear: to provide a safe, inclusive, and transformative space where horses and humans come together for healing and growth.
