On April 28, Coastal Virginia Magazine hosted the inaugural Battle of the Burgers at the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach, and crowned Coastal Virginia’s best burger. Local restaurants battled it out as they served slider-sized versions of burgers paired with refreshing Virginia craft beers.

Attendees and food judges voted for their favorite burger after sampling sliders from Bay Local, The Egg Bistro, Repeal Bourbon and Burgers, Whiskey Kitchen, Gourmet Burger Bistro, J & K Style Grill, Swan Terrace Grill at Founders Inn, Black Angus Restaurant, Casby’s Kitchen and Tap, 11th Street Taphouse, Lager Heads and the Culinary Institute of Virginia.

Guests voted for their favorite craft brewery after tasting beers, served in a commemorative souvenir glass, from MoMac Brewing, Ardent Craft Ales, Wild Wolf Brewing Company, Coelacanth Brewing Company, Fair Winds Brewing Company, Deschutes Brewery, Old Bust Head Brewing Company, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, The Virginia Beer Co., Big Ugly Brewing, Ballast Point Brewing, Wasserhund Brewing and Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery.

Judges Lakesha Brown Renfro, co-owner of Mango Mangeaux in Hampton; Katie Collett, co-anchor for WAVY-TV 10; George Culver from I-Heart-Food; and Chef Chris Hill chose Repeal Bourbon and Burgers’ Fire & Brimstone as the Critics’ Choice for best burger. Repeal Bourbon and Burgers’ Fire & Brimstone and Big Ugly Brewing were also voted as the People’s Choice for best burger and best brewery, respectively. The Bay Local Slider was voted as the runner-up for both the Critics’ Choice and People’s Choice.

Guests also enjoyed live music from Anthony Rosano & The Conqueroos; fun games; and offerings from vendors, including Carder Realty Group Inc., Chix Beach Pallet Co., Copper Designs by Nataki, Faithfully Yours Jewelry Boutique, Garage Experts of Virginia Beach, Lost at Sea, Mr. Rogers Windows and Doors, Premier Events, Inc., Pure Romance by Cindy V and The Dressing Vroom.

A special thanks to our sponsors, Esprit Décor, Whiskey Kitchen, Chesbay Distributing and Central Meats; as well as the vendors; live performers; breweries pouring over 4,000 beers; and restaurants for serving over 9,000 burgers!

Make sure to save the date for next year’s #CoVaBurgerBattle on April 27, 2019.
