To Michael Diaz, a Newport News resident in the Marshall Ridley area and Carpenter with Breeden Construction, construction isn’t merely a 9-to-5 to pay the bills; it is a chance for him to give back to the community he loves. For him, it’s personal. Michael’s first exposure to construction was through YouthBuild, a trade program that works with young adults ages 16 to 24 to obtain valuable industry certifications. In partnership with Breeden Construction’s job shadowing program, Michael joined, post-YouthBuild, as a full-time team member working at the Marshall Ridley redevelopment, and it has been “love at first site.” Michael states, “Breeden has taught me a lot about working with others and, most of all, being part of a work family.” Michael aspires to, one day, be a Project Manager. In his spare time, he gives back to YouthBuild by serving as a guest speaker and mentor.
