Nature with a Twist at the Aquarium

Excursions Organized by Virginia Aquarium Combine Learning and Leisure On Our Shores

If you’re looking to get up-close and personal with our local wildlife and waterways this summer and have a little fun while you’re doing it, the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center has an excursion or two for you. These are just a few upcoming events being organized by Aquarium staff. The events take place at variety of locations, so be sure to check the Aquarium’s website for details including the latest schedule of events.

Wildlife Kayak & Wine Tour
May 22

Discover the value of the Eastern Shore’s local grass beds and their fish and invertebrate inhabitants. Join experienced staff as you wade in the shallow water to seine, dip-net fish and identify invertebrates. Next up is kayak trip to a wharf near Chatham Vineyard, led by local guides from Southeast Expeditions. 

Back Bay & False Cape Tour
May 29

During this 4-hour guided tram tour through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park, participants will learn about local wildlife and history. A 1-mile hike in Wash Woods is also part of the tour. Participants will be transported from the Aquarium by van to the tour location. 

Eastern Shore Collection Trip
June 7

Explore Kiptopeke State Park’s shallow, sandy shoreline and Cape Charles’ valuable grass beds as you look for juvenile fish and invertebrates in their natural habitat. Led by an Aquarium naturalist, participants will seine, dip-net and identify the creatures that call this habitat home.

Fishing at the Aquarium
June 19

This catch-and-release experience will introduce participants to proven fishing techniques, fish identification and the rules and regulations put in place by wildlife authorities to encourage successful anglers across generations. This excursion takes place on the Aquarium’s private balcony on Owls Creek.
