Why has liposuction become so popular?

Liposuction remains popular thanks to its ability to target fat precisely, provide a quick recovery with minimal downtime, leave only tiny scars, and deliver excellent results for suitable candidates—all with little disruption to daily life.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that removes excess fat to reshape and contour the body. It can be done on its own or used alongside other surgeries, such as breast lifts or reductions, to enhance results by refining the shape of the breast and surrounding areas.

What are the different types of liposuction?

Liposuction techniques have evolved to improve safety, comfort, and results. Traditional liposuction utilizes a suction cannula to manually remove fat, whereas tumescent liposuction incorporates a fluid mixture to minimize bruising and pain. Power-assisted liposuction uses a vibrating cannula for easier fat removal, while ultrasound-assisted liposuction liquefies fat with sound waves, making it particularly suitable for treating dense areas. Laser-assisted and radiofrequency-assisted methods both melt fat and offer mild skin tightening. Each method can be tailored to the patient’s needs and desired outcome.

Who is the best candidate for liposuction?

The best candidates for liposuction are patients with isolated pockets of excess fat who are otherwise healthy. Examples might be patients with a lower belly pooch or excess fat in the love handle area. However, patients who are not their ideal weight may still be good candidates for liposuction and achieve meaningful improvement and excellent contour results. This is often a great motivator for these patients to eat right and exercise to maintain their surgical results.

Do you have to go to sleep to have liposuction?

While liposuction is most frequently performed under anesthesia, it can also be done with the patient awake. In most cases of awake liposuction, oral sedation is used in conjunction with tumescent liposuction to make the patient as comfortable as possible with this technique.

How much fat can be removed during liposuction?

The American Society of Plastic Surgery recommends no more than 5 liters of fat be removed at one time. I think this guideline is very reasonable; however, other factors, such as a patient’s health, BMI, simultaneous surgeries being performed, and whether the patient is going home the same day, all contribute to how much fat the patient can safely have removed.

Can I use the fat removed during my liposuction procedure somewhere
else in my body?

Fat grafting, the process of transferring fat from one part of the body to another, has become very popular. Many patients seek facial, breast, and buttock augmentation in a more natural way than with implants. One’s own fat can be used to replace fat that has diminished over time, as we see in facial aging, and in post-pregnancy changes in a woman’s breasts and body. Additionally, fat grafting can be used to turn a flat contour into a curvy contour, enhancing the shape of the hips and buttocks, commonly referred to as a Brazilian butt lift.

What kind of doctors perform liposuction?

Patients should always be aware of their doctor’s training. Ask if your doctor is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Ask how much of your doctor’s practice is committed to doing liposuction. Finally, look at before and after photos of the doctor’s work to determine if you are satisfied with the results they have achieved.
