After couples have spent a significant chunk of change on their wedding day, an immediate subsequent expense arises: the honeymoon. Traditionally, this is at least a week-long vacation to some exotic destination. Times have changed, though, and couples are increasingly choosing a more laid-back approach to the traditional honeymoon. One such alternative is a staycation-style honeymoon. Whatever your reason for choosing to stay close to home, you have plenty of great nearby options for a relaxing, memorable honeymoon.
Cape Charles
Just a quick drive across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel will take you to quaint, historic Cape Charles. With a population just more than 1,000 people, it is the perfect place to unwind with your new spouse. Stay in a cozy bed and breakfast, take a romantic walk on the beach or have a picnic at Central Park. Take an afternoon to cruise the historic downtown shops and visit the museum. Be sure to also save a day to get out on the water to fish or go on a boat tour.
Williamsburg
Whether you are a thrill seeker, history buff, wine connoisseur or foodie, Williamsburg is your destination for an action-packed honeymoon. Explore Colonial Williamsburg and the Jamestown Settlement, then take a ghost tour and have an exquisite meal at one of the many top-rated restaurants. Ride the day away at Busch Gardens, the world’s most beautiful theme park, or spend a relaxing afternoon tasting your way along the Colonial Wine Trail.
Virginia Beach Oceanfront
It’s easy for long-time Coastal Virginia residents to take the Oceanfront for granted. Taking the time to really explore and enjoy it during your honeymoon will give you a brand new appreciation for all it has to offer. Indulge at the luxury resorts and fine dining restaurants. Check out thrilling attractions like iFLY indoor skydiving, dolphin tours and parasailing. Get out on the water or relax on the beach—no matter the speed you’d like to take your honeymoon, the Oceanfront is the perfect spot for a dream staycation.
Smithfield
Often overlooked by Coastal Virginians, Smithfield is a nearby idyllic retreat from the bustle of city life. Stay on the banks of the Pagan River at the gorgeous Smithfield Station. Head to the marina for a boat ride or take a walk along the pier. Head into the historic downtown to do some shopping and grab a bite at a mom and pop restaurant. Visit the museums and art galleries, then take a romantic twilight stroll at Windsor Castle Park.
First Landing State Park
Take it all the way back to the site of the first settlers to Virginia at First Landing State Park. Camp out under the stars at one of the 200-plus camp sites at this beautiful park nestled in the back dunes of the beach. Not the tent-pitching type? Camp out in luxury in one of the on-site cabins. In the midst of the busy city, this spot is the perfect getaway from it all. Take a walk through the trails during the day and cook out over a campfire in the evening.
