Raise a glass to Camp Cardinal’s Virginia Wine Camp series
Summer camp shouldn’t just be for kids. And what better way to glow it up for grownups than adding a little vino with a hint of Virginia viticulture? Throw in some thoughtfully prepared Southern cuisine and a great cause, and this is summer fun you can feel good about.
Camp Cardinal, a camp and RV resort located on the Severn River off Mobjack Bay in Gloucester Point, began offering an event series called Virginia Wine Camp in June 2025. The camps take place on select weekends and are open to overnight camp guests as well as the general public and include unique opportunities to meet Virginia winemakers and taste wines from around the Commonwealth.
The first Wine Camp was held June-20-21 and featured Rosemont of Virginia vineyard and winery. Other upcoming Wine Camp events will showcase Gauthier Vineyard, July 11-12, and Silver Hand Meadery, Sept. 19-20. Also, stay tuned for future Virginia Wine Camp events in the works such the Rosé Soiree.
A typical Wine Camp weekend starts with Friday Night Winemaker Mingles at which ticketholders meet the featured winemaker, who offers insight into their craft along with wine tastings. The Saturday Wine-Paired Luncheon is a midday meal featuring dishes prepared by local culinary talent. Winemakers stay at Camp Cardinal throughout the weekend, allowing guests the opportunity to ask questions, share experiences and expand their wine appreciation.
These Winemaker Weekends benefit a Gloucester-based nonprofit organization called Knott Alone-Hold Fast, which helps veterans struggling with personal challenges by getting them out on the water of the Chesapeake Bay, “creating purpose and connection through shared work and conversation.”
