While a cluster of fine dining favorites like Le Yaca and Fat Canary are well known to be reservation-worthy, there are plenty of lighter bites, comfort classics and family favorites to choose from too. Here are our picks. 

Aberdeen Barn Williamsburg The family-owned steakhouse on Richmond Road is a perennially popular dinner destination for visitors and locals, known for its farmhouse décor and friendly service as much as the Prime Rib cooked to juicy, slow-and-low perfection. Amber Ox Public HouseJust off Merchants Square, you’ll find inspired seasonal dishes, made from scratch with regional ingredients served by the friendliest folks around. Amiraj Modern Indian Kitchen Chicken Tikka Masala and Palak Paneer still hold sway at this former Nawab reimagined as a sophisticated, modern Indian kitchen. Aromas Coffee House Bakery & Cafe Located on Prince George Street, with a second location called Captains Den in Newport News, Aromas is a family-owned coffeehouse that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner at very fair prices, as well as a wide array of specialty cakes, pies and pastries, including vegan and gluten-free options. aromasworld.com

Bellissimo Pizza Café A Historic Triangle favorite offering authentic NY-style pizza by the slice, this family owned restaurant brought a little bit of Italy and the Bronx to Williamsburg in the early 2000s. Berret’s Seafood Restaurant and Taphouse Grill At Merchants Square, Berret’s beloved crabcakes, shellfish, local oysters and fresh catches have been attracting loyal fans since 1983. Try the Baked Oysters with crabmeat, country ham and breadcrumbs. Fish is also front and center—from Crispy Grouper to a Sweet Pepper-Seared Mahi Mahi. Blue Talon Bistro Say bonjour to classic French comfort fare at this archetypal bistro, a Merchants Square mainstay under the creative direction of Chef David Everett. Carrot Tree Kitchens You can satisfy your sweet tooth with the delectable selections at this scratch bakery with locations in Williamsburg and Yorktown. But they’re also sweet on garden-fresh and good-for-you breakfast and lunch items. Casa Pearl This ingenious combination of seaside and Latin inspiration mashed up with Southern style is located in a renovated gas station in The Edge District. Locally sourced bivalves, peel ’n eat shrimp and sublime ceviche tantalize. Christiana Campbells Tavern This elegant, Colonial-style restaurant was established in the 1700s and favored by George Washington himself for its seafood. Cochon on 2ndBehind the clock tower on Second Street, Cochon has garnered a loyal following for just under a decade. The art of grilling and smoking with aged woods is complemented by lovely fish and fowl on a seasonal menu. Cook’s Burger Bar The classic mid-century Midwestern restaurant, complete with ’50s diner booths and wood-paneled walls, gets a bougie menu twist or two. Opened in 2024, Cook’s is retro done right.
