Local Artist’s Pie Goes Viral

Artist Karen Freidt's edible pie sculpture.

Pie fashion is high fashion for Virginia-based sculptor Karen Freidt, who swapped art supplies for kitchen utensils in her recent dive into creative baked goods. The former NASA employee experimented with elaborately carved pie crusts ranging from floral landscapes to 3-D multi-colored creations.

When Freidt began her pie journey in May, she posted pictures of her unique pastries on social media. One share led to another and Freidt’s pies gained instant notoriety among the nation’s elite. Theodora, daughter of The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards, and Anna Sui, a leading New York City fashion designer, were among the many who raved about Freidt’s decadent designs. Sui even featured Freidt’s pies in her digital preview of the designers Spring Summer 2021 collection.

Freidt is now promoting a Edible Pie Sculpture as a fundraising venture for the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. Up for grabs is one of Freidt’s homemade blueberry pies, vanilla ice cream and a hand-block-printed tea towel made from 100 percent organic cotton and signed by the sculptor herself. Every $25 donated through Freidt’s JustGiving page is matched with one live entry drawing to win the handmade treats. Freidt’s fundraising goal is $2,000.

All proceeds from the Edible Pie Sculpture fundraiser will be donated to the Foodbank. The cut off for donations is at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29. Giveaway delivery is limited to the Coastal Virginia area, but further details can be found on the entry form.
