Only the most revered fashion trends can withstand the test of time. Plaid, much like paisley and pinstripes, has emerged en vogue numerous times over the past several centuries. The angular and brightly colored pattern has once again reclaimed its popularity and has made its 2022 debut in none other than men’s wedding fashion.
Philip Michael, owner of Coastal Virginia’s Philip Michael Fashion for Men, attributes the design’s resugence in fame to the out-of-the-box thinking of younger couples. “It’s really the men ages 25 to 30 that are interested in plaid,” says Michael. “It’s a fun wedding suit. Plaid is also considered more casual [than traditional solid suits]. It’s best for outdoor ceremonies and destination weddings.”
Whether you want to party in plaid from head to toe, or simply incorporate subtle hints of the Scottish design into your wedding day, Michael knows just how to find your happy medium:
Playful Positioning. Michael’s rule of thumb: “If the groom wears plaid to stand out, the groomsmen should wear solid colors to complement his design, and vice versa.”
Match Your Mate.
“If the bride has selected certain colors for the bridal party, the plaid on the groomsmen’s attire can match up with the color of the bridesmaids’ dresses,” says Michael.
Color Couture.
Gray and blue shades are staple suit hues. Consider plaids with a pop of burgundy or emerald for cold weather weddings and crisp white lines for summer ceremonies.
Dare to Be Bold.
Many of the private labels available in Michael’s shops boast plaid variations in both sport jackets and full, slim fit suits. A colorful pocket square or geometric tie can be worn to any occasion, so why not be be bold and go plaid on your big day.
