STIHL Timbersports competition makes its mark at the beach
When you think of fierce competitions at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, surfing or skateboarding might come to mind. Maybe running, soccer, volleyball or even lifesaving or sand sculpting. But probably not lumberjack sports. German power tool manufacturer STIHL, which has its North American headquarters Virginia Beach, is out to change that.
STIHL Timbersports launched its 2025 season with the second annual North American Trophy event held on May 3 at the 24th Street Stage. The 16 highest ranked lumberjack athletes from the U.S. and Canada went head-to-head, pushing their limits in four sawing and chopping disciplines including stock saw, underhand chop, single buck and standing block in a nail-biting timed elimination format.
After some dramatic upsets and plenty of flying sawdust and wood chips, West Virginia’s Matt Cogar clinched his second consecutive North American Trophy win. The action continues at the STIHL Timbersports U.S. Championships July 25-27 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, featuring the top 24 lumberjacks and 12 lumberjills in the nation. Look for a possible return to the beach of these unique athletes in 2026.
