What’s New at Nauticus in January and February

Nauticus Featured

Nauticus and The Battleship Wisconsin will kick off 2021 with a new exhibit, educational events and a Black History Month celebration. Here’s what’s new and happening at Nauticus in January and February:

Beginning Jan. 30: Planet or Plastic?

Nauticus will feature the U.S. debut of the National Geographic exhibit, Planet or Plastic? This traveling exhibition tells the story behind plastic from its invention, just over a century ago, to its current mass consumption through visual storytelling with multimedia elements, including 70 profound images as well as powerful infographics and videos.

Beginning Jan. 30: STEAM Scout Saturdays

On Saturdays, through winter and spring, members of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts can enjoy a fun-filled day at Nauticus. Take part in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) activities within the Planet or Plastic? exhibit and aboard the Battleship Wisconsin. Learn about how to protect different animals, that are living in the depths of the oceans and even our local Chesapeake Bay, from plastic pollution. STEAM Scout Saturdays also gives guests a chance to pilot an underwater robot, meet environment career professionals, communicate in secret ship codes and more, earning scout requirements with each activity.

Feb. 12: Homeschool Day

Homeschool children and their families are invited to Nauticus for a hands-on day of STEM learning. Experience special educational and interactive programming inside of Nauticus and on the Battleship Wisconsin.

Feb. 27: Afrofuturism; Black Scientists and Science Fiction

Nauticus celebrates Black History Month with a special theme: Afrofuturism. Afrofuturism, a concept that was coined by Mark Dery in 1993 and exemplified in movies such as “Black Panther” and “The Wiz,” is the merging of Black history and culture with science fiction, science, technology and art. Nauticus will feature STEAM-based activities, crafts and programs inside Nauticus and on the Battleship Wisconsin.
