Fitness and Nutrition Advice from Expert Jim White

What is it that you want to achieve? Do you want to lift heavier, bike further, run faster or eat cleaner? We all have ambitions that we want to turn into a reality. But what exactly does it take to bring your fitness and nutrition to the next level?

Goal Setting

Naming goals without limitations or fears is the first step in taking fitness and nutrition to the next level. When it comes to goal setting, confidence is key. Goals and desires can be hindered when we focus on our limitations, our past or our fears. Getting to the next level requires naming your specific goals. For example, saying, “I will run the Shamrock Half Marathon in under two hours this spring” versus “I might run another half marathon this year” elicits two very different feelings. Maybe right now that seems far-fetched, as you can hardly break a 10-minute mile, but do not allow your perceived limitations to hinder your future accomplishments. Specifically naming our goals, mapping out a plan and dreaming bigger than we thought possible are the first steps in turning your ambitions into a reality.

Accountability

Bringing a personal trainer, a friend or a dietitian alongside of you while you work to reach your goals provides accountability and motivation. Have you ever hit snooze for that 5 a.m. workout you promised yourself you would wake up for? How about a 5 a.m. workout with your trainer? Will you choose different foods knowing that you check in with your dietitian this week? Whether it be in nutrition or fitness, accountability partners help us to show up, follow through and succeed.

Change

Finally, bringing fitness and nutrition to the next level requires change. In order to be stronger, faster or healthier, deviation from your norms is necessary. Trying new things can be intimidating, which is why goal setting and accountability is invaluable. Change may look like adding an extra day of walking to your week, trying new foods or meal prepping for the first time. Change may also look like adding strength training to your routine, tracking your food intake or signing up for a personal trainer. This step is where the rubber truly meets the road and sacrifices need to be made.

Each morning when your feet hit the floor, remember your “why?” What is it that you want to achieve, and why do you want to achieve it?
