Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads is searching for one local military family to claim a new home on behalf of the organization’s Habitat for Heroes initiative. This year’s Habitat for Heroes program features a new construction home located in the Western Branch neighborhood of Chesapeake.
Wanting to extend its mission beyond the construction of affordable homes for civilian families, Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads launched Habitat for Heroes in 2014. The military-inspired initiative helps to create affordable housing solutions for local veterans, reservists and active-duty families and is sponsored in part by a $50,000 commitment from the First Settlers Region of the Porsche Club of America.
The organization is currently accepting and reviewing applications for the future owners of the three-bedroom, one-and-a half bathroom Chesapeake home situated across from the Elizabeth River. Income, monthly budgets, property history and other factors contribute to the evaluation and selection of the Habitat for Heroes family. Once selected, the family is required to complete 200 volunteer hours of “sweat equity,” which include comprehensive training in financial literacy.
Habitat’s upcoming builds include both a one- and two-story home located on Lake Kennedy Drive in Suffolk. The two construction sites are on track for a Fall 2018 completion date.
Further information about becoming a homeowner can be found here.
