Remote Work: 5 Tips for Staying Productive and Organized

working from homeHad you asked the U.S. workforce two months ago, the majority would view the #WFH movement as a luxury. But as the spread of COVID-19 exacerbates the need for remote work, U.S. professionals are realizing the downsides to being away from the office. Telecommunicating doesn’t have to be a drawback though – think of it as an opportunity to focus purely on projects, void of colleague interruptions, and a chance to reevaluate office-wide practices.

We’ve listed our best practices for #WFH to make your remote workday organized, productive and stress-free.

Get Dressed

I agree, putting on a full face of make-up and high heels just to sit at a makeshift desk in the kitchen does seem a bit trite, but getting dressed is proven to make you feel more confident in tackling the day. Practicing your regular before-work morning routine not only helps you retain normalcy in quarantine but will make for an easier transition when office closures have lifted.

Take Lunch

No, you don’t have to pack your lunch, but take regular breaks as you would at the office. Whether your business allows for 15 minutes or an hour, take that time to get outdoors, call a friend, meditate or organize your house. Taking “me time” helps you relax and boosts afternoon productivity.

Stretch

Regardless of working from home or in the office, sitting all day wreaks havoc on your back. Working from a private space allows for more time and room to take care of your body. After a conference call, treat yourself to five minutes of meditative stretching to ease neck and back pain. Our favorites are child’s pose, torso twists and pec stretches.

Get Creative with Meetings

Phone and video conferences have become routine business operations for remote workers. Give yourself and your colleagues something to look forward to by spicing up weekly meetings. Suggest coffee via Zoom, an afternoon podcast review or, for one-on-one meetings, practice safe social distancing and engage in a face-to-face meeting in the park.

Do Work

Starting every day by drafting a to-do list will not only give you a sense of direction but will keep you from getting sidetracked by non-work related duties such as cleaning, doing laundry or running errands. You’ll also feel more accomplished as you watch the tasks dwindle throughout the day.

Need to diversify your meals, too? Check out our list of local restaurants that are proudly serving patrons via curbside, delivery and to-go.
