Top Tips for Wedding Videography

by | Mar 7, 2018

Wedding videography has certainly evolved significantly from the days of camcorders and cassette tapes. Amazingly, though, the technology changes so rapidly that even in the past few years there have been huge advancements in the wedding video industry.

Your video tells the story of your special day unlike any other media can. Videographers can now combine creativity with advanced technology to capture your wedding memories in a way that is deeply personal, artistic and entertaining.

One feature of videography that has become popular in the past few years is aerial footage from drones. The footage can add beautiful soaring shots of your venue, which is particularly stunning at some Coastal Virginia settings with lots of outdoor scenery, such as vineyards and farms on several acres of land. Of course, if you are planning to use a drone for video at your wedding, you will need to verify that your venue allows them. You also need to ensure that your videographer is certified by the FAA and is licensed and insured.

The visuals aren’t the only aspect of video that have improved in recent years. With inconspicuous ear microphones, videographers can now capture crisp audio from the most important moments of the day—from the ceremony vows to the tearful whispers of a father seeing his daughter in her dress for the first time. With these advanced audio tools, the videographer can capture intimate moments without being intrusive.

Along with these sweet moments, videographers can also capture special clips from family members and friends. These could include marriage advice from grandparents, a word of encouragement from the couple’s closest friends or a childhood memory shared by a sibling. “You have an opportunity at your wedding to capture footage of the most important people in your life,” says Justin Gibby, owner of Gibby Visuals in Virginia Beach. “I’ve shot many weddings where a family member passes away a short time later. Their cameo in the wedding video might be the last footage the couple has of that person. It’s extremely meaningful.”

It’s not all serious and sentimental, though. Video can also be used for entertainment value at a wedding. Gibby Visuals recently launched a fun new feature couples can incorporate into their wedding: a slow motion booth. As with a photo booth, guests can dress up with props and costumes. The video camera then captures your guests’ antics in slow motion. It’s a unique way to entertain your guests during the cocktail hour and reception, and it makes for hilarious footage and a truly unique keepsake. No matter how you decide to incorporate video into your wedding, the best advice is to make sure you do have a wedding video at the end of the day. A majority of brides surveyed who did not have a wedding video regretted it and would recommend that future brides hire a videographer.

“Ten years from now, the wedding video is something you and your family will look back on and enjoy more than anything else from the wedding day,” says Gibby.
